How Does a Bankrupt School District Spend 100s of Millions it Doesn't Have?

The major construction projects in the levy include $148 million to expand and modernize Lowell Elementary School on Capitol Hill, $150 million to replace an unnamed elementary school, $225 million to expand and modernize Aki Kurose Middle School in Southeast Seattle, $50 million to add classrooms to Chief Sealth International High School in West Seattle, and nearly $85 million to modernize John Marshall Alternative School in Green Lake. The school is used as a temporary location for students when their schools are undergoing construction.

Yes that's $658 million dollars for a failing school district.  Seattle public schools is now a$2.2 billion operation with so many people hands in the cookie jar. This should not be a surprise to anyone who has lived here a decade or two. You see SPS's main objective is to manage construction contracts that get fed to those in the know.

Want to stop this fraud and theft ?   Vote for school vouchers !

OSPI Has No Rudder

Washington state's backdoor deals to teacher unions and lobbyist is being flushed out in real time.

The latest comes as selected superintendent of public instruction Chris Reykdal wants to bankrupt the state by taking on the current administration in DC...wait oh that won't happen because they now have the power to simply raise taxes at will.

There are so many federal dollars at risk as these self serving selected officials dig in their heals to keep their addenda moving forward. Reykdal is betting on replacing the current federal funds with new state taxes and tax increases to property, sales, and gas.

You were warned.

The U.S. Education Department on Monday Canceled $600 Million in Grants for “Divisive Ideologies.”

The grants had been awarded to teacher preparation programs that trained future educators in what the department said were “inappropriate and unnecessary topics,” such as critical race theory, which promotes the fundamental framework view that racism is embedded in all institutions and aspects of society; diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); and social justice activism. Some of the defended programs also included race-based teacher recruitment and staffing strategies, according to the department.

A study by Parents Defending Education, an independent organization that rallies against ideological indoctrination in K-12 schools, found that since 2021, the Education Department has spent at least $1 billion on various DEI-related initiatives. That includes approximately $490 million on DEI hiring efforts, $343 million on DEI programming, and $170 million on DEI-related mental health programs.

The law is clear: treating students differently on the basis of race to achieve nebulous goals such as diversity, racial balancing, social justice, or equity is illegal under controlling Supreme Court precedent,” Craig Trainor, acting assistant secretary for civil rights, wrote in a letter sent to the education departments in all 50 states.

While emphasizing the obligations under Title VI, the federal law prohibiting discrimination based on race for institutions that receive federal dollars, the letter also referenced the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2023 decision, which found it unconstitutional for public and private colleges to use racial preferences in admissions.

“At its core, the test is simple: If an educational institution treats a person of one race differently than it treats another person because of that person’s race, the educational institution violates the law,”

60% of Seattle Parents Concidering Leaving Seattle Public Schools

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) survey showed that nearly 60% of adults with children in SPS surveyed last year said they had considered dis-enrolling their children because of concerns about education quality. According to the survey findings, 86% of those who had dis-enrolled their children said education quality was among top three reasons why.

Forty-two percent said changes to the highly capable cohort program for advanced learners were among the top reasons they considered leaving.

The district received $100,000 from the state Legislature to fund an enrollment study even though its broke and could have used those funds to provide any number of benefits to students.

Did SPS really need to take a survey for $100k to understand they suck at teaching kids? Lock outs, lock downs and virtue signaling curriculum apparently is not popular!

High School Teacher Charged with Human Trafficking and Prostitution

These tragic stories are almost becoming weekly events.  So it really makes you wonder why Washington state teachers unions backed by Washington state democrats want to block parents for knowing when their child has been a victim.

Washington State’s Eighth Graders Aren’t Proficient in Math and 69 Percent Aren’t Proficient in Reading

71 percent of Washington State’s eighth graders aren’t proficient in math and 69 percent aren’t proficient in reading, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress
(NAEP), also known as the Nation’s Report Card. This is despite record spending.

The assessment is administered every two years and measures national and state student achievement in math and reading in fourth and eighth grades.
According to the latest results released Wednesday, 71 percent of 8th-grade students in the Evergreen State were not proficient in math compared to 58 percent in 2013. 69 percent of Washington’s eighth graders weren’t proficient in reading compared to 58 percent in 2013.
Scores have been declining since 2017, even though school districts and teachers' unions have attempted to put the majority of the blame on the school shutdowns in response to the 2020 COVID pandemic. Ironically those same entities were the ones who insisted on the closures despite the virus posing almost no risk to children.

From 2013 and 2024, the amount of students in Washington performing below the basic NAEP level of proficiency in math spiked by 20 percent, even exceeding the national rate, and the percentage of eighth graders performing at or above the NAEP proficiency level dropped 12 points, while the national rate of decline for this group was 7 points.
The 4th grade average math scores dropped eight points since 2013 as the national average dropped four points during the same time period.

The latest NAEP results also show a decline in literacy at the state and national levels.
According to the results released Wednesday, 69 percent of Washington eighth graders were not proficient in reading compared to 58 percent in 2013. The average reading score for Washington’s fourth-graders dropped 9 points, over the past decade. The national averages dropped 7 points for eighth graders and 9 points for fourth graders.

As scores declined over the past decade, state and federal spending on education continued to skyrocket as spending on the education of Washington students doubled to approximately $20,300 per student, one of the highest per pupil amounts in the US.Yet, Washington’s Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal, who has been in office during the entire decline, believes the solution is to throw more money at the problem. He said in a statement following the abysmal scores, “This legislative session, I put forward funding proposals to make gains in multiple critical areas. Our schools are doing the best they can to battle the effects of inflation while maintaining high-quality programming and services for students, but we can’t expect them to hold the line year after year with no relief in sight. There is no question that state funding in public education has not kept pace with the real costs of providing services, and my proposals aim to close those gaps.”

Washington has already squandered $3 billion in federal pandemic relief funds sent to Washington for academic recovery with nothing to show for it. Now the Democratic-controlled state legislature is gearing up to blow even more money while not addressing the problem that have led to failing grades and a massive student exodus.

Despite his decade of failure, The Seattle Times endorsed Reykdal
in his recent re-election campaign. The outlet wrote at the time, “Reykdal’s experience, political acumen, and energy to make the case for increased school funding are strengths that should enable him to turn things around,” despite providing no evidence to make the case. Additionally, the endorsement went on to list his areas of failure, claiming he was “learning from the past and moving forward stronger.”

State Rep Travis Couture said in response to the disastrous results, "NAEP report card on education outcomes came out. WA continues to have some of the most abysmal scores in reading and math in roughly 3 decades. OSPI and Dems are failing our kids. Instead of fixing academics, they/them plan to make it better by erasing parent’s rights tomorrow."

How Your Teen’s Medical Privacy Changes When They Turn 13

 Did you know ?

  • When kids turn 13, Washington state law allows them to make some medical decisions without parental consent.
  • Kids ages 13 to 17 can make their own decision to get birth control, seek mental health treatment, get tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and more.
  • Parents are able to view parts of their kid’s online medical records as a “proxy.”
  • Speaking to your child’s doctor beforehand can help with the transition.
  • As a parent, it can feel like a lot changes when your child turns 13 — who knew your mere existence could suddenly be so embarrassing for them? Another big shift: Your teenager may start making some medical decisions on their own and won’t always need your consent, which can come as a surprise to some folks.

Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling

Imprinting anti-American, subversive, harmful, and false ideologies on our Nation’s children not only violates longstanding anti-discrimination civil rights law in many cases, but usurps basic parental authority.  For example, steering students toward surgical and chemical mutilation without parental consent or involvement or allowing males access to private spaces designated for females may contravene Federal laws that protect parental rights, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA), and sex-based equality and opportunity, including Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX).  Similarly, demanding acquiescence to “White Privilege” or “unconscious bias,” actually promotes racial discrimination and undermines national unity.

My Administration will enforce the law to ensure that recipients of Federal funds providing K-12 education comply with all applicable laws prohibiting discrimination in various contexts and protecting parental rights, including Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI), 42 U.S.C. 2000d et seq.; Title IX, 20 U.S.C. 1681 et seq.; FERPA, 20 U.S.C. 1232g; and the PPRA, 20 U.S.C. 1232h.

Hey what about Seattle School District?

Wouldn't you like to know if your child is in danger? Guess what they don't want you to know!

Can you imagine living in a State where your elected representatives are willing to go on the record to protect pedophiles instead of your children in the public education setting. Washington Gun Law President, William Kirk, discusses how that is the exact state of the Progressive movement in Washington State today as every single member of the House Education Committee with a "D" next to their name has voted down an amendment that would have required school districts to immediately notify parents if their children are suspected of being victimized by the pedophile that has, of course, been employed by the school district. If I didn't have the receipts to show you, none of you would believe me. So learn more today and arm yourself with education.

5 Electric School Buses Burst into Flames in Wilbraham, Mass While Charging Overnight.

On January 21, 2025, a fire involved four electric school buses in Wilbraham, Massachusetts. The Wilbraham Fire Department responded to the incident at approximately 1:30 a.m. at the bus storage facility located at 2043 Boston Road.

Upon arrival, firefighters found four buses fully engulfed in flames. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Another Lion Electric Bus Fire: Huntsville, Ontario

A Lion Electric school bus in Huntsville, Ontario, burst into flames after students were evacuated. This incident happened on January 13, 2025 and comes just 47 days after a similar fire in Quebec. Are these buses safe? Join me as I analyze what went wrong and why immediate inspections are critical.

Classical Education Resurgence Is Shaping School Choice

All told, more than 677,000 children in grades K–12 were enrolled in classical education programs last year, a 2024 market analysis report by Arcadia Education states.

That includes students in 1,024 Christian Evangelical schools, 308 Catholic schools, and 219 public charter schools.

Additionally, about 261,000 students were home schooled using classical curricula.

Between 2017 and 2023, homeschooling under classical education instruction increased by 51 percent, followed by 7 percent in private religious schools and 4 percent in public schools, according to the report.

Arcadia forecasts an increase to 1.4 million students and 2,575 schools by 2035, including 119 new charter schools and 200 existing public schools that will adopt the classical curriculum

    Opposition From Public School Teachers

Teachers unions at the national and local levels have opposed school choice measures, especially taxpayer-funded voucher programs that fund private school tuition, because they could decrease enrollment-based funding.

Turf War Between Pimps Leads to Dramatic Shootout on Aurora Avenue (KOMO'S words not mine)

Near Aurora Avenue and 96th Street, footage shows a woman diving for cover as shots ring out. In a sign of the severity of the situation, gunfire happened sporadically over several minutes. As a result, that woman is seen repeatedly cowering behind bushes to avoid being shot.

Note:  I have reached out to City of Seattle District 5 counsel person Cathy Moore on Dec 30th for comment (cathy.moore@seattle.gov)  she has not responded.

Want to See Seattle Schools Really Suceed? Allow School Vouchers to Happen and they will.

House Bill 1140, co-sponsored by Rep. Jim Walsh, R-Aberdeen, would specifically fund ESAs for low-income students, special needs families and students trapped in failing schools.

Not all schools can serve all students, this sort homogenized approach has failed.

Supporters of school choice via vouchers have a tough opponent in the teacher's unions and there supporters but there is hope as more and more tax payers see their taxes skyrocketing and student achievement dropping.

At some point fiscal reality must step in.

On Jan. 24, 2025, Texas State Senator Brandon Creighton filed Senate Bill 2, the Texas Education Freedom Act, which would give students universal access to school choice and provide at least $2,000 each year to students’ education savings account. If a family decides to enroll their child in a private school, each student would receive $10,000 per year, and students with a disability enrolling in a private school would receive $11,500 per year.
