Did you know ?
When kids turn 13, Washington state law allows them to make some medical decisions without parental consent. Kids ages 13 to 17 can make their own decision to get birth
control, seek mental health treatment, get tested for sexually
transmitted infections (STIs) and more.
Parents are able to view parts of their kid’s online medical records as a “proxy.”
Speaking to your child’s doctor beforehand can help with the transition. As a parent, it can feel like a lot changes when your child turns 13 —
who knew your mere existence could suddenly be so embarrassing for them?
Another big shift: Your teenager may start making some medical
decisions on their own and won’t always need your consent, which can
come as a surprise to some folks.
