Civil Rights, School Discipline, and Students with Disabilities in the ESEA

Sen. Chris Murphy and Sherrilyn Ifill of NAACP LDF examine the impact on students and policy

Zero-tolerance and other overly punitive school discipline policies have been undermining education for students of color and students with disabilities. Students subjected to expulsions and suspensions lose out on valuable instruction time.
As Congress begins to move forward on reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, or ESEA, please join the Center for American Progress Action Fund and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc., or LDF, for remarks by Sherrilyn Ifill of LDF and a keynote address by Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), followed by a panel of experts on the topic. The discussion will focus on civil rights, inclusive school discipline practices, and ensuring academic success for students with disabilities.
